The offense has let the Capitals down but the defense has also struggled, allowing 3.00 goals per game. John Carlson and Rasmus Sandin have combined for 4.3 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to carry the puck into the offensive zone and easily find open shots on the net. In addition, goaltender Darcy Kuemper has struggled with a .891 save percentage and a 3.27 goals-against average on 641 shots with -7.7 goals saved above average.
