San Diego State Aztecs (1-1) vs. Utah Utes (1-1)

For the second straight year, the San Diego State Aztecs take on the Utah Utes. The 2022 college football season continues with Week 3 matchups Saturday, September 17, when the Utes host the Aztecs at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Last year, the Aztecs outlasted the Utes 33-31 in triple overtime, upsetting the odds as 8-point home underdogs. San Diego State is a huge 21.5-point road dog this time around, while the totals are listed at 49.5 points.

The San Diego State Aztecs bounced back from a surprising 38-20 defeat to the Arizona Wildcats in Week 1. They defeated the Idaho State Bengals 38-7 in Week 2 but couldn’t cover a huge 33-point lead. After a hideous defensive effort in the opener, the Aztecs forced a couple of turnovers against the Bengals, while their offense racked up 488 total yards.

San Diego State tortured Idaho State on the ground. The Aztecs had 43 totes for a thumping 380 yards, averaging 8.8 yards per carry. Sophomore RB Jaylon Armstead posted 96 yards on just five carries, while senior QB Braxton Burmeister toted the pigskin eight times for 80 yards and a TD.

“There’s a lot of work for us to do offensively,” San Diego State head coach Brady Hoke said. “We got some good rushing. We have a lot of guys back there who got their hands on the ball. I’d like to see those backs, us doing a good job with them and feeding them the ball. And I’d like to keep our quarterback healthy. He’s healthy, but you’ve got to make sure, we have to make sure that we keep him healthy.”

Braxton Burmeister, who spent the last two seasons at Virginia Tech, went 15-of-26 for 108 yards and a TD against the Bengals. He was awful in Week 1, finishing 5-of-10 for 51 yards, a TD, and an interception. The Aztecs recorded just 232 total yards in that 18-point defeat to the Wildcats, who tortured San Diego State for 461 tot al yards while averaging 8.5 yards per pass.
