College bowl season is in full swing and that brings us a clash of mid-major programs when a program from the Sun Belt takes on one from the AAC. The Texas State Bobcats do battle with the Rice Owls in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl Tuesday afternoon. Texas State finished the regular season 7-5 and beat South Alabama 52-44 at home to win outright as a six-point underdog in their regular season finale November 25. Rice ended the regular season 6-6 and edged Florida Atlantic 24-21 at home in their regular season finale November 25, though they failed to cover as four-point favorites. In the all-time series between the programs, each team has won twice with Rice taking a 38-28 home victory in the most recent meeting on September 26, 1987.

Texas State had dropped three of their previous four games before outgunning South Alabama at home in a wild regular season finale. The Bobcats improved to 7-5 overall and finished tied for second in the Sun Belt West Division with a 4-4 conference mark. Against South Alabama, Texas State bolted to a 24-0 lead in the opening quarter and then held off the Jaguars the rest of the way. The Bobcats were up 31-17 at the half and didn’t let South Alabama closer than seven the rest of the way. Texas State held a slim 479-476 edge in total offense while losing the first down battle 26-22 and the time of possession by a 31:21 to 28:39 margin. Both teams turned the ball over twice in the contest.

The Bobcats enter this contest 24th in the FBS in passing offense as they average 280.8 yards per game through the air. Texas State stands 23rd in the nation in rushing offense as they av erage 190.9 yards per game this season on the ground. The Bobcats are 17th in the country in scoring offense by putting up 36 points per game. Texas State is 119th in the country in scoring defense as they allow an average of 33.8 points per game. TJ Finley is 264 of 385 passing for 3,287 yards with 24 touchdowns against eight interceptions while adding 92 yards plus five scores on the ground. Kole Wilson (61 grabs, 697 yards, eight TD), Ashtyn Hawkins (51 catches, 819 yards, thre e TD), Mahdi (18 grabs, 276 yards, TD) and Drew Donley (11 receptions, 169 yards, TD) are all over 150 receiving yards on the year. Mason Shipley has drilled 52 of 53 extra point attempts and 14 of 14 field goal attempts with a long of 47 on the year.
