A pair of Atlantic Division teams that are Original Six rivals take the ice in search of a win north of the border. The Detroit Red Wings are on the road as they travel to face the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night. Detroit was at home against Chicago in another Original Six matchup Thursday night in their previous contest, rolling to a 5-1 victory. Montreal was at home against Florida in their previous game Thursday night, coming up on the wrong end of a 5-1 score. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Red Wings own a 6-2-2 advantage though it was the Canadiens earning a 3-2 overtime win on the road in the first meeting this season back on November 9.

Detroit won for the fourth time in five games as they earned the home victory in the second game of a back-to-back set Thursday night. The Red Wings improved to 12-7-3 on the season and stand tied for third in the Atlantic Division, six points behind Boston for the top spot. Detroit is 4th in the league in goals per game as they average 3.68 goals a night this season. The Red Wings are 13th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 2.91 goals a game. Detroit is 8th in the league in power play success as they cash in on 23.4% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Red Wings are 17th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully get through 79% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Chicago, Detroit bounced back from their loss to the Rangers by taking care of business on home ice. The Red Wings were o utshot 12-10 in the opening period of play but took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room at the first intermission. J.T. Compher opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season, shorthanded, at 2:29 off assists from Andrew Copp and Jake Walman. After the Blackhawks tied the game with a power play goal less than a minute later, Robby Fabbri gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead with his sixth goal of the season at 8:42 off an assist from Walman. In the second period, Detroit was outshot 13-9 but outscored Chicago 2-0 to open up a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Ben Chiarot made it a 3-1 game with his second goal of the season at 5:09 off assists from Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond. Only 47 seconds later, Compher scored his second of the night and sixth of the season at 5:56, on the power play, off assists from David Perron and Raymond, for a 4-1 advantage. The third period saw the Red Wings tally the lone goal of the stanza with the shots even at 10 to put the game away. Fabbri scored h is second goal of the night and seventh of the season at 10:54, on the power play, off assists from Daniel Sprong and Moritz Seider to close the scoring. Alex Lyon made 34 saves for the Red Wings, who were outshot 35-29, in the win. He is slated to be back in goal for this contest as well.
