A pair of Eastern Conference teams take to the ice in search of two points down in the Tar Heel State. The Buffalo Sabres are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday night. Buffalo was in action on the road against St. Louis Thursday night and was on the wrong end of a 6-4 score. Carolina was at home as they hosted the Islanders Thursday night in their previous contest, suffering a 5-4 overtime loss. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Hurricanes own a commanding 8-2 advantage. That includes a 3-2 overtime victory at home in the first matchup this season back on November 7.

Buffalo continues to struggle putting together consecutive victories as they followed up a triumph over the Rangers by getting dumped on the road by the Blues Thursday night. The Sabres dropped to 10-11-2 and stood tied for sixth in the Atlantic Division, 11 points behind the Bruins for the top spot in the division. For the season, Buffalo is tied for 22nd in offense as they are averaging 2.96 goals per game on the season. The Sabres are 21st in the league in goals against as they allow 3.35 goals per contest this year. Buffalo is 25th in power play success as they cash in 15.2% of their chances with the man advantage. The Sabres are 12th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully get through 83.3% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against St. Louis, Buffalo’s goaltending struggled to keep the puck out of their own net and that proved to be their undoing. The Sabres held a 15-8 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period of play but they were down 3-1 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. Buffalo gave up the first three goals of the game in the opening 10:59 before Rasmus Dahlin got the visitors on the board. His fifth goal of the season at 13:32 off assists from Kyle Okposo and Peyton Krebs narrowed the margin to two goals. In the second period, the Sabres held a 16-6 shot edge with each team scoring twice, leaving them down 5-3 at the second intermission. Zach Benson got the Sabres within a goal with his second goal of the season at 6:10 off an assist from Dylan Cozens. Krebs tied the game with his first goal of the season at 10:53 off assists from Dahlin and Jordan Greenway. Buffalo gave up a pair of goals 24 seconds apart later in the period to end up down two after 40 minutes. In the third period, the Sabres owned a 15-6 shot advantage with both teams scoring once, leaving them on the wron g end of the scoreboard. After giving up a goal to trail 6-3, JJ Peterka closed the scoring with his 10th goal of the year at 16:42 off assists from Cozens and Benson. That was as close as the Sabres would get in the game. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 14 saves for Buffalo, who owned a 46-20 shot advantage, in the loss. He is expected to get the call in goal again here.
