The Charlotte Hornets fell victim to the rules of the NBA's In-Season Tournament on Tuesday night in Madison Square Garden. In order to qualify for the wildcard spot in the tournament, the Knicks were forced to run up the score against the beaten Hornets to increase their overall point total in tournament games. The result was a 116-91 Knicks win over the Hornets to clinch the wildcard spot. The undermanned Hornets were left licking their wounds after a second straight loss. The Hornets continue to play without All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball, now considered several weeks away from returning from an ankle injury. The 91 points scored, without their leader, was a season-low for the Hornets. Rookie Brandon Miller scored 18 points while fellow rookie Mark Williams added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

“Our effort was really good tonight. Our purpose of play was not,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. “That’s what we have to learn from.”

The Hornets are 14th in the NBA in points per game this season although that number could take a hit without Ball in the lineup for several games. They are 11th in the NBA in field goal percentage and 24th in 3-point field goal percentage. The Hornets' defense is ranked 27th in points allowed per game. They are 26th in defensive field goal percentage and 27th in 3-point defense. The Hornets are 18th in turnovers per game, another number that could rise without Ball running the offense. They are 13th in rebounds per game, slightly above average.

Key Injuries: Ball (ankle) is out.
