It’s a battle of Eastern Conference teams on the ice as they collide in a matchup down in the Tar Heel State. The Tampa Bay Lightning are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Carolina Hurricanes Friday night. Tampa Bay fell 3-2 in overtime at home to Winnipeg in their previous contest Wednesday night. Carolina comes in off a 6-3 victory at home over Edmonton in their most recent game Wednesday night. The Lightning took a 3-0 home win on October 24 before Carolina earned a 4-0 shutout win in the most recent meeting, which came on the road on November 11.

Tampa Bay saw their three-game win streak snapped as they were beaten in overtime by the Jets on Wednesday night at home in their previous contest. The Lightning enter Friday third in the Atlantic Division with a 6-6-4 record, leaving them 10 points behind the Bruins for the top spot. Tampa Bay went into Wednesday 8th in the league in goals per game as they put up an average of 3.50 goals per contest. The Lightning stands tied for 26th in goals against by allowing 3.60 goals per game. Tampa Bay is 2nd with the man advantage as they cash in on 31.3% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Lightning are 11th in penalty killing as they successfully work through 84.5% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Winnipeg, Tampa Bay earned one point but saw their win streak snapped with the overtime defeat Wednesday night. The Lightning held a 16-10 edge in shots on goal in the opening period but trailed 2-1 at the first intermission. After giving up the first two goals of the game to trail by a pair, Steven Stamkos halved the Tampa Bay deficit with his eighth goal of the season, on the power play, at 18:06 off assists from Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman. In the second period, Tampa Bay was outshot 11-10 but scored the lone goal of the period to tie the game at two after 40 minutes. Brayden Point tied the game with his eighth goal of the season at 6:13 off an assist from Brandon Hagel. The third period saw the Lightning outshot 8-6 with neither team lighting the lamp, sending the game to overtime. During the extra session, Tampa Bay was outshot 3-1 and gave up the winning goal to end up with the loss. Jonas Johansson made 29 saves for the Lightning, who held a 33-32 edge in shots on goal, in the loss. He is expected to get the start in goal again here.
