It’s a quarterfinal clash of the ESPN Events Invitational as a member of the AAC collides with one from the Big East on the parquet floor in the Sunshine State. The #19 Florida Atlantic Owls take on the Butler Bulldogs Thursday afternoon with the winner advancing to the semifinals. Florida Atlantic comes in off a surprising 61-52 loss to Bryant at home Saturday, losing outright as a 23.5-point favorite, in their previous game. Butler was drubbed 74-54 on the road by #18 Michigan State, failing to cover the line as a 10-point underdog, in their last game Saturday. This marks the first time that the two teams have met as Division I opponents.

Florida Atlantic was stunned by Bryant in their previous game, which may serve as a wakeup call for them after making the Final Four a season ago. The Owls dropped to 2-1 on the season and look to regroup as they take the floor for this contest. Against Bryant, Florida Atlantic scored the game’s first eight points and led 11-2 early on before things tightened up. The Owls led by three at the half: after scoring the opening bucket of the second half to go up five before giving up a 13-2 run that left them down 39-33 with 14:38 to play. They never got closer than four the rest of the way en route to the loss. Florida Atlantic shot a cold 26.2% from the field, including five of 30 from beyond the arc, and missed seven of their 20 free throw attempts in the game. Johnell Davis led the Owls with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

This season, the Owls put up an average of 75.7 points per game, putting them 180th in the nation in scoring offense. Florida Atlantic pull down 39.7 rebounds per contest, leaving them 108th in the nation, and dish out 16 assists a night. The Owls are above average defensively, ranking 24th in the country by allowing 60 points per game on the year. Vladislav Golden leads the team with 15 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Nicholas Boyd (10.7 points, 3.3 assists), Johnell Davis (10 points, seven rebounds) and Brandon Weatherspoon (10 points) are solid secondary scoring options. Giancarlo Rosado, Alijah Martin, Bryan Greenlee, Brenen Lorient and Jalen Gaffney also are part of Dusty May’s rotation. Florida Atlantic shoot 44.9% from the floor as a team. The Owls connect on 8.7 three-pointers a night on 33.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Florida Atlantic is shooting a crummy 66% from the free throw line as a team this season.

Boyd (undisclosed) is questionable for this contest.
