Maryland has had a strange season, starting out 5-0 and then losing their next four games. The losses to Northwestern (33-27) and Illinois (27-24) hurt the worst, considering they played competitive games against Ohio State (37-17) on the road and against Michigan (31-24) last week at home. The Terps are nowhere as good as those elite teams, but they are also talented enough that they can stay competitive. They played Michigan pretty tight last week, considering they were a 17.5-point favorite against the No. 3 team in the nation. But the Terps just committed too many mistakes, as the Wolverines took advantage with a fumble return for a touchdown in the first quarter.
Taulia Tagovailoa completed 21 of 31 for 247 yards, but also had two picks. Maryland couldn't run the ball (35 yards), but that's to be expected against one of the nation's top defenses. Maryland lost the turnover battle 3- 1 and had they won that category, we might be talking about a humongous upset. The Terps allowed 150 rushing yards on 45 carries and that could be a concern here because Rutgers wants to run the football a ton in this game.
Tagovailoa has completed 65.5% of his passes for 3,016 yards with 22 TDs and 10 INTs. WR Jeshuan Jones leads all receivers with 49 catches for 677 yards and four TDs (13.8ypc). The offense averages 384.3 yards per game with 277.9 passing yards (26th), but just 1064 rushing yards (115th). On defense, they allow 124.1 rushing yards (35th) per game, which is key in this matchup.
