A pair of Eastern Conference teams looking to head into Thanksgiving on a positive note take the ice in the Motor City. The New Jersey Devils are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday night. New Jersey fell 5-3 at home against the Rangers Saturday night in their previous contest. Detroit fell 3-2 to Toronto as part of the NHL’s Global Series in Sweden Friday afternoon in their previous game. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Devils own a 6-4 advantage and have won the last three meetings. That includes a 4-3 home win in the first matchup this season on October 12.

New Jersey lost for the fourth time in five games as they let a third-period lead slip away in a loss to the Rangers Saturday night. The Devils fell to 8-7-1 on the season and stand tied for sixth, eight points behind the Rangers for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division standings. On the year, New Jersey is 6th in scoring as they average 3.69 goals per game on the season. The Devils are 29th in goals against as they allow 3.81 goals per contest. New Jersey is 1st in power play success as they have cashed in 39% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Devils are 20th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 77.2% of their shorthanded situations on the season.

Against the Rangers, New Jersey had their chances as they led early in the third period before they fell apart late to wind up with the loss. The Devils saw the sh ots even at 10 in the opening period and the scoreboard was even at two after 20 minutes of play. After giving up the first goal of the game, Jack Hughes tied the game with his sixth goal of the season at 9:25 off assists from Dougie Hamilton and Jonas Siegenthaler. The Devils gave up a goal to trail again before Ondrej Palat knotted the game with his first of the season, on the power play, at 19:12 off assists from Jesper Bratt and Tyler Toffoli. In the second period, the shots were even at 11 with neither side denting the twine, leaving the game level at two at the second intermission. The third period saw the Devils outshot 14-12 and they were outscored 3-1 to take the loss. Erik Haula gave the Devils a 3-2 lead with his sixth goal of the season at 1:17 with assists going to Hughes and Hamilton. New Jersey gave up three goals in the final nine minutes to turn the game into a loss. Vitek Vanacek made 30 saves for the Devils, who were outshot 35-33, in the loss. He is expected to g et the start in goal for this contest.
