It’s an interconference matchup on the ice as a pair of teams looking to pick up two points do battle in the Windy City. The Buffalo Sabres are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday night. Buffalo was defeated 3-2 on the road by Winnipeg Friday night in their previous contest. Chicago was in action Saturday afternoon on the road as they traveled to face Nashville in a Central Division contest in the front end of a back-to-back set that closes here. The Blackhawks fell 4-2 to Tampa Bay in their previous contest Wednesday night. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Blackhawks own a 6-2-2 advantage, including a 4-3 overtime win at home in the most recent matchup on January 17, 2023.

Buffalo suffered their third straight loss and their fourth in the last five games as they were knocked off by Winnipeg in their previous contest Friday night. The Sabres dropped to 7-9-1 and stood seventh in the Atlantic Division, 11 points behind the Bruins for the top spot in the division. For the season, Buffalo is 24th in offense as they are averaging 2.82 goals per game on the season. The Sabres are 17th in the league in goals against as they allow 3.24 goals per contest this year. Buffalo is 29th in power play success as they cash in 10.2% of their chances with the man advantage. The Sabres are 10th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully get through 84.6% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Winnipeg, Buffalo started slow and was unable to climb back out of the hole they had dug, sending them to defeat again. The Sabre s were outshot 7-6 in the opening period of play but skated to the dressing room with the game scoreless after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Buffalo held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal but they were outscored 3-1 to trail by that margin at the second intermission. The Sabres spotted Winnipeg a pair of goals early in the period to trail 2-0 before Alex Tuch tallied his fifth goal of the season, unassisted, at 4:56 to get Buffalo on the board. They gave up a goal later in the period to trail by two goals at the end of the stanza. In the third period, Buffalo held a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal and scored the lone goal of the period, leaving them a goal short as time expired. JJ Peterka scored his seventh goal of the season at the 1:00 mark of the period off assists from Rasmus Dahlin and Zach Benson to make it a one-goal game. The Sabres couldn’t tally the equalizer despite their best efforts. Eric Comrie made 15 saves for the Sabres, who held a 28-18 edge in shots on goal, in the loss. Devon Levi is expected to get the start in goal for this contest.
