Monday's college basketball player props
Washington State transfer TJ Bamba has scored 13 and 15 points in Villanova's two games thus far and will only grow more comfortable in head coach Kyle Neptune's offense as the season progresses. However, there have not been enough minutes to go around yet to justify him recording his highest point total of the season, as nine Wildcats players have seen more than 13 minutes per game. In addition, Penn head coach Steve Donahue has had a good handle on how to slow down the Villanova offense, holding the Wildcats to 71 or fewer points in the last two head-to-head meetings.
With teammates like Tyler Burton (O/U 14.5 points) and Justin Moore (O/U 17.5 points) having lofty projected totals, there will only be so many points to go around for Villanova tonight.
Zach Edey, the reigning Naismith Playe r of the Year, had 27 double-doubles last season (most in Division I). In addition, he had eight games of 30-plus points and 10-plus rebounds, while the rest of the Big Ten Conference had six.
Edey has proven he can gobble up rebounds with limited minutes, as he secured 11 rebounds in 20 minutes in the team's opening night win over Samford. He totaled just eight rebounds in the last game against Morehead State in 24 minutes of action, but with this game projected to be much closer than the first two, we expect Edey to be on the court much longer tonight.
Xavier has shot 27.5% (ranks 262nd in D-I) from the 3-point line, so there should be plenty of misses for Edey to grab. The Musketeers do not have much frontcourt depth behind 6-foot-10 Abou Ousmane, so as long as Boilermakers head coach Matt Painter decides to use Edey's height advantage and not match Sean Miller's smaller lineup on the other side, Edey should be clean ing the glass with regularity tonight.
Monday's college basketball game picks
Rider failed in its first game against a Power Five opponent this season, losing by 30 at Marquette as a 24.5-point underdog. However, the Golden Eagles shot a blistering 43.3% (13-of-30) from 3-point range in that game, and this is still a Broncos team that was picked to win the MAAC in the Preseason Coaches Poll. Rider should be a handful for the Cornhuskers between Mervin James and Allen Powell, who were named Preseason All-MAAC First Team.
Broncos head coach Kevin Baggett is a two-time MAAC Coach of the Year, and we expect him to devise an excellent game plan against a shorthanded Cornhuskers team that is without Juwan Gary (suspension) and could again be without Keisei Tominaga, a 13.1 points per game scorer last season who injured his ankle in an exhibition game.
The early line movement for this matchup has skewed heavily toward St. John's, as the game has gone from a pick'em to our best sports betting apps being in unison with a spread of -2.5. Thus, we follow that line movement in the Red Storm's first game at Madison Square Garden under Rick Pitino. We are getting good value on their moneyline odds given the 2.5-point spread, considering other competitors like bet365 are as high as -140.
The Red Storm are 59-10 in non-conference games over the last six seasons, but their expectations have been tempered with a 42-70 record in Big East play, especially since they have won double-digit conference games just once in the previous eight years. However, expectations are high with Pitino on the sidelines as he brought in a slew of transfers, with the lone holdover Joel Soriano (25 double-doubles was second in the country last season) to man the middle.
This is only a three-star play, as Michigan earn ed an impressive 25-point under-the-radar victory over UNC Asheville in the season opener. However, that game turned quickly in the first half (the Wolverines built a 12-point halftime lead) as Big South Player of the Year Drew Pember was saddled with foul trouble. St. John's has much more depth to overcome any of those problems, and we expect Michigan to find life much more difficult on the road after two convincing home wins to start the season.
