The Capitals are having a rough season with their offense struggling, scoring only 2.00 goals per game with only five goals in the last three games. Alexander Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, and Dylan Strome have scored 11 goals and nine assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four skaters have three goals or more and opposing defenses can eliminate the hapless offense as a result.

The offense has struggled but the defense has also been a disappointment, allowing 3.09 goals per game. John Carlson and Rasmus Sandin have combined for 1.4 defensive point shares and 45 blocked shots but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net with ease. In addition, goaltender Darcy Kuemper has struggled with a .892 save percentage and a 3.07 goals-against average on 232 shots with -2.7 goals saved above average.
