A pair of Southwest Division teams take the floor in search of a victory in the Lone Star State. The New Orleans Pelicans are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Houston Rockets Friday night. New Orleans was drubbed 122-101 on the road by Minnesota in their last game Wednesday night, failing to cover the line as a 9.5-point underdog. Houston rolled to a 128-94 home win over the Lakers Wednesday night in their last game, winning outright as a two-point underdog. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Rockets own a 42-36 advantage but the Pelicans have won six of the last seven meetings, including a 117-107 road win in the most recent matchup on March 19, 2023.

New Orleans suffered their third straight loss as they were hammered by Minnesota Wednesday night, in part to being rather shorthanded. The Pelicans entered Thursday 4-4 on the season and stood third in the Southwest Division, two games behind the Mavericks for the top spot. Against Minnesota, New Orleans was down 11 in the first quarter before trimming the margin to four after the opening stanza. The Pelicans were blown out in the second quarter by a 44-20 margin to trail by 28 and never made a serious push the rest of the way. New Orleans shot only 38.7% from the floor, including eight of 28 from three-point range, turned the ball over 17 times and allowed New Orleans to shoot 54.9% from the floor. Brandon Ingram led the Pelicans with 24 points and six assists in the loss.

On the season, the Pelicans are 26th in the league in scoring offense as they average 108.3 points per game on the season. New Orleans is 24th in rebounding by collecting 42.6 boards a night while the team ranks 26th in assists by dishing out 23.3 dimes a night. The Pelicans are 19th in the league in scoring defense as they allow 115.3 points per game so far this year. Brandon Ingram puts up 21.4 points plus 5.2 boards per contest this season while Zion Williamson adds 21.8 points plus seven rebounds a night. CJ McCollum (21.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.7 assists), Jonas Valanciunas (11.6 points, 8.5 rebounds) and Jordan Hawkins (12.8 points) are solid secondary scoring options. Herbert Jones (10 points), Matt Ryan (10.3 points), Dyson Daniels, Kira Lewis Jr., Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Larry Nance Jr. and Cody Zeller are key pieces in the Pelicans’ rotation. New Orleans is 26th in field goal percentage by shooting 44.5% from the field as a team this season. The Pelicans are 24th in the league in threes per game as they knock down 11.1 trip les per contest and stand 23rd in three-point shooting by hitting 33.3% percent from beyond the arc.

Trey Murphy III (knee) had surgery to repair a torn meniscus and is expected to be out until mid-November. Najj Marshall (knee) has a bone bruise and is expected to be out of action until mid-November. Jose Alvarado (ankle) has yet to take the floor this season and is out indefinitely. McCollum (lung) missed Monday’s game and doesn’t have a timetable for return at this point. Williamson (personal) and Jones (leg) missed the game against the Timberwolves and are questionable here. Watch for any information about their statuses heading into tip-off.
