Philadelphia Flyers (5-6-1) vs. San Jose Sharks (0-10-1)

The 2023-24 NHL season goes on Tuesday, November 7, with the Philadelphia Flyers facing off against the slumping San Jose Sharks in the interconference showdown at SAP Center at San Jose with the puck drop at 10:30 PM ET.

Philadelphia and San Jose open their two-game regular-season series. The Flyers aim for their second straight victory over the Sharks, so let’s take a closer look.

The Philadelphia Flyers have struggled as of late, winning just one of their previous five games overall. Last Saturday, the Flyers were blanked by the Los Angeles Kings 5-0, failing to build on a 5-1 road victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

The Kings outshot the Flyers 30-24 and converted one of their five power-play opportunities. The Flyers went 0-for-4 with the man advantage and couldn’t find a way past Cam Talbot all night long.

“There are things we need to learn,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “We almost made it 2-1 on the power play, and then a few little things happened and the next thing you know it’s 4-0. Those are the lessons we need to learn against a real ly good hockey team. Those are the lessons we need to figure out.”

The Flyers are scoring 3.08 goals per game (19th in the NHL), but they are only 4-for-41 with the man advantage (30th). On the other side of the puck, the Flyers rank 19th in goals against (3.25 per game) and are tied with Washington and Pittsburgh for the 14th-best penalty-killing percentage (79.4%).

Philadelphia misses its starting goaltender Carter Hart (mid-body injury), who’s gone 4-3-0 with a 2.52 GAA and a .913 save percentage so far this season. Cal Pet ersen made his season debut in that 5-0 loss against the Kings, so we are expecting to see Samuel Ersson in the crease on Tuesday night. Ersson is 1-2-1 with a troublesome 3.90 GAA and a .815 save percentage this season.
