According to the preseason media poll, the Boise State Broncos came into the season as the favorite in the Mountain Division of the Mountain West Conference. The program went 7-5 last season and brought back eight starters on offense and nine on the defensive side of the ball.

The Broncos went into Reser Stadium on Saturday and took one on the chin in the season opener, as the Oregon State Beavers took a 24-0 halftime lead against them. The Broncos cut the lead to 10 early in the fourth quarter but could never get closer in a 34-17 loss.

The Beavers out gained the Broncos 470 to 311 yards for the game and committed three turnovers, compared to Boise State's five.

The big story from the Broncos' opening loss was the struggle of returning starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier who went 4 for 8 with 30 passing yards and two interceptions. He was replaced by redshirt freshman Taylen Green, who gave the Broncos a spark going 19 for 28 for 155 yards and one interception passing, and added 102 yards and two touchdowns with his legs. As of Wednesday, the coaching staff still had Bachmeier listed as the starter but also mentioned that both Bachmeier and Green would get first-team practice reps.
