The Colorado Avalanche (6-0-0, 12 points, 1st Central) play the second game of a three-game road trip on Thursday when paying a visit to the Pittsburgh Penguins (2-4-0, 4 points, 7th Metropolitan). Colorado is off to an excellent start with six consecutive victories to open this season following a 7-4 win Tuesday night over the New York Islanders. Pittsburgh is struggling as the Penguins have lost three straight following a 4-1 setback at the hands of the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. Colorado will play without Pavel Francouz, Gabriel Landeskog and Chris Wagner. Pittsburgh’s John Ludvig is questionable.

The Colorado Avalanche are scoring an average of 4.50 per game which is third best in the NHL. Colorado is averaging 37.0 shots per game which is first in the league and has a success rate of 28.5% on the power play which is eighth best, scoring six goals in 21 power plays. Colorado is winning only 47.2% of its face-offs which is 25th. Mikko Rantanen has set the pace early for Colorado leading the team in goals scored with five, assists with seven and points with 12. Cale Makar is second in points with nine, which includes three goals and six assists. 

 

Colorado is allowing an average of 2.00 goals per game which is third in the NHL. The Avalanche are giving up an average of 28.0 shots per game which is seventh best. Colorado's penalty kill unit is the second best in the NHL, holding opponents scoreless 95.5% of the time the Avalanche are short-handed. Through the first six games of the regular season, Alexandar Georgiev is the only goalie to appear between the pipes for the Avalanche. Georgiev is 6-0-0 with a 1.98 goals against  average and a .930 save percentage.
