The Phoenix Suns continue their brief road trip to start the season with a date in Los Angeles against the Lakers on Thursday evening. The Suns won their season opener over the Warriors on the road thanks to a spirited fourth quarter after surrendering a halftime lead. The Lakers lost their opener in Denver in what was a rematch from last year's Western Conference Final. The opening tap is scheduled for 10:00 PM EST.

Despite a poor shooting night, Kevin Durant was able to make his first return to Golden State since winning back-to-back titles a memorable one as his new team, the Suns, pulled out a 108-104 victory to kick off the 2023-24 season. Durant shot just 7-of-22 from the floor but added 10 rebounds to help propel the Suns to victory while appreciating the warm greeting he got from his former fanbase.

“It's always good to be recognized for the work you put in so it was exciting to see people I hadn't seen in a while, some familiar faces,” Durant said. “I feel like the fan base here got nothing but love and respect for me as an individual player and as a person. That's all I can ask for.”

The Suns jumped out to a 61-46 lead at the half and looked to be on their way to an easy opening night win before the Warriors took over in the third quarter. Golden State outsco red the Suns 40-19 in the third quarter to wrestle control of the game away from the Suns. All-Star Devin Booker helped lead the Suns back in the fourth quarter including five straight points in a critical stretch with under five minutes left to get the Suns in the win column. Booker finished the game with 32 points in a game the Suns were forced to play without newly acquired Bradley Beal, who sat out with back issues. Another newcomer, center Jusuf Nurkic, finished with a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Suns were not able to unveil their complete new team on opening night with Beal being held back with a back issue. His status is up in the air for the matchup with LA as well on Thursday night. Regardless, the Suns certainly have added more toughness with the arrival of veterans like Nurkic and Eric Gordon. Gordon contributed 16 points off the bench despite shooting just 4-of-16 from the field. The Suns' defense stepped to the forefront, holding Golden State to just 35% shooting from the field and 23% from the field. With Nurkic and Durant underneath, the Suns outrebounded Golden State 60-49.

Key Injuries: G Beal (back) day-to-day.
