A pair of teams from the Eastern Conference coming in off losses on Frozen Frenzy night take the ice searching for a victory in the province of Quebec. The Columbus Blue Jackets are on the road as they make the trip across the border to face the Montreal Canadiens Thursday night. Columbus fell 3-2 in overtime at home to Anaheim Tuesday night in their previous contest. Montreal was dropped 5-2 at home by New Jersey in their most recent game Tuesday night. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Blue Jackets own a 7-2-1 advantage but it was the Canadiens winning the last two matchups, including an 8-2 rout on home ice in the most recent meeting on March 25, 2023.

Columbus earned a point on Tuesday night but ended up falling in overtime to miss out on the other point with the defeat to the Ducks. The Blue Jackets entered Wednesday 3-2-1, leaving them tied for second in the Metropolitan Division, one point behind the Rangers for the top spot. Columbus is tied for 19th in goals per game as they score an average of 2.83 goals per game. The Blue Jackets are 16th in goals against as they surrender an average of 3.17 goals per contest. Columbus is 20th in power play success as they have converted 14.3% of their chances with the man advantage. The Blue Jackets are tied for 10th in the league in penalty killing by successfully working through 85% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Anaheim, the Blue Jackets earned a point but took the overtime loss, preventing them from moving into a tie for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division standings. The opening period saw Columbus with a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal and they took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. Emil Bernstrom opened the scoring with his first goal of the season, on the power play, at 16:49 off assists from Ivan Provorov and Adam Fantilli. In the second period, the Blue Jackets saw the shots even at 10 but surrendered the lone goal of the stanza to even things up at one at the second intermission. The third period saw Columbus outshoot Anaheim 17-8 with each team scoring once, leaving the game even at two and forcing overtime. Fantilli gave the Blue Jackets a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the year at 9:13 off assists from Jack Roslovic and Jake Bean. They allowed the equalizer with 3:47 remaining in regulation. In overtime, the Blue Jackets were outshot 2-1 and gave up the winning goal to take the OT loss. Elvis Merzlikins made 24 saves for Columbus, who held a 37-27 edge in shots on goal, in t he loss. He is expected to be between the pipes for this contest as well.
