Vancouver Canucks (1-0-0) vs. Edmonton Oilers (0-1-0)

The 2023 NHL season goes on Saturday, October 14, with the Vancouver Canucks taking on the Edmonton Oilers in the Pacific Division showdown at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, and the puck drop is set for 10:00 PM ET.

Vancouver and Edmonton lock horns for the second time this term. Last Wednesday, the Canucks routed the Oilers 8-1 as +130 home underdogs. Vancouver is a +175 road dog this time around, while the total sits at 7.0 goals and is juiced to the under.

The Vancouver Canucks had no mercy in their season opener. They had a 4-0 lead after Brock Boeser completed a hat-trick with 12:30 left to play in the second period. Boeser finished the game with four goals, while Elias Pettersson and JT Miller accounted for one goal and three assists apiece. Quinn Hughes had three assists, and Filip Hronek added a couple of dishes while posting a plus-4 rating.

The Canucks outshot the Oilers 32-27 and went 3-for-6 with the man advantage. Thatcher Demko had a good day in the office, allowing one goal on 22 shots, while Casey DeSmith posted five stops in relief.

“I kind of got to that mindset in the summer where I’ve got to be a better hockey player and really work hard,” Boeser said. “I came back and it continues each and every day, I’ve got to have that same mindset. Tomorrow, the next practice, the morning skate, I’ve got to keep it going.”

Thatcher Demko was battling the flu last Wednesday and couldn’t finish the game. Demko reportedly vomited inside his mask due to dehydration, and he’s questionable to play Saturday in Edmonton. If Demko doesn’t suit up, Casey DeSmith will patrol the crease. DeSmith spent the last five years with the Pittsburgh Penguins and was 15-16-4 with a 3.17 GAA and a .905 save percentage in 2022-23.
