The opening week of the 2023-24 NHL season continues Thursday, October 12, with the St. Louis Blues facing off against the Dallas Stars in the Central Division showdown at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The puck drop is set for 8:00 PM ET. The Stars are listed as firm -206 moneyline favorites, while the total sits at 6.5 goals and is juiced to the under. Dallas aims for its fourth straight regular-season victory over St. Louis after sweeping a three-game series in 2022-23. 

The St. Louis Blues recorded 81 points (37-38-7) last regular season and finished sixth in the Central Division. They missed the postseason for the first time since 2018. The Blues were bad on the defensive side of the puck, allowing 3.63 goals per game (27th in the NHL), and their goaltenders ranked 28th in the league in save percentage (.888). 

On the offensive side of the puck, the Blues were tallying 3.17 goals per game in 2022-23 (17th in the league). They boasted an 11.1 shooting percentage (tied-3rd). Jordan Kyrou led the way for the Blues with 37 goals and 36 assists in 79 appearances, while Pavel Buchnevich added 26 goals and 41 dishes in 63 games. 

Jordan Binnington, who won the 2019 Stanley Cup with St. Louis, is expected to guard the cage in the Blues’ season opener. The 30-year-old netminder went 27-27-6 with a troublesome 3.31 GAA and .894 save percentage this past regular season. Binnington is only 3-5-1 with a 2.37 GAA and .914 SV% in nine career starts against Dallas.
