The Seattle Kraken come into their third season in existence looking to build upon last year's playoff appearance. They surprised much of the NHL with a late-season surge that resulted in a playoff appearance. To get back into the playoffs, the Kraken will have to navigate one of the toughest divisions in the NHL. The stellar division was in evidence in the opener as the Kraken fell 4-1 to the defending Stanley Cup Champion Vegas Golden Knights. Jared McCann netted the only goal for the Krakken while goalie Philipp Grubauer turned away 24 shots in net.

“We had enough scoring chances,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “Early in the hockey game, we could execute a little bit better on a couple of them, we had a couple of missed nets on a couple of real good opportunities that we executed the play really well, we didn’t finish. All of a sudden in a (first) period where we’ve done a lot of pretty good things, we’re down 2-0. Now you’re now you’re digging out of a deep hole. Ultimately, we didn’t capitalize when we had the good opportunities, whether it be 5 on 5, or on the power play.”

One of the major upticks for the Kraken last season that helped them into the playoffs was the team's jump in goals per game. They finished fifth in the NHL in goals per game after finishing near the bottom in their inaugural season. They were just 21st in the NHL on the power play however, and that showed through in game one as they struggled with the man advantage. Defensively, the Kraken will need much better goaltending this season if they want to return to the playoffs. In 2022-23, Seattle finished 15th in goals allowed per game and just 27th in save percentage.
