The Jacksonville State Gamecocks (4-1, 3-1-1 ATS, 1-4 O/U) battle the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (1-4, 1-4 ATS, 2-3 O/U) in a C-USA clash on Wednesday evening. The Gamecocks posted a road win against Sam Houston State in their previous bout. The Blue Raiders just dropped a road decision against Western Kentucky. There are no previous meetings between these schools.

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks are seeking a third consecutive victory. The squad’s only defeat of the season was a 30-16 decision against a solid Coastal Carolina squad. They rebounded by defeating Eastern Michigan 21-0 in week four and were seven-point favorites in a 35-28 overtime road win against Sam Houston State last week to improve to 2-0 in C-USA play. The Gamecocks have covered the spread in three of their four games on the season.

Logan Smothers has seen a majority of the action at QB. The junior wasn’t originally the #1 QB as Zion Webb earned the #1 spot in week one. Smothers, who spent his opening seasons at Nebraska, has been the better QB compared to Webb. Smothers has collected 474 passing yards and a stellar 5:0 TD to INT ratio.

The offense will run more than pass. Malik Jackson has been stellar, rushing for at least 100 yards in three of his last four games. The senior RB now has 505 rushing yards on 6.6 yards per rush. The receiving core has three players with at least 100 yards. Perry Carter leads the squad with 166 receiving yards. The Jacksonville State offense has scored 21 or fewer points in two of their last three games.

The Gamecocks defense is their top strength, especially the secondary. They held UTEP to 14 points in the season opener and shut out Eastern Michigan in their third win. The defense struggled at times against a strong Coastal Carolina offense. The unit wasn’t as sharp as usual last week, conceding 435 total yards. They rank 39th against the pass and 38th against the run.

Jacksonville State is scoring an average of 27.6 points, ranking them 79th. The defense is conceding an average of 15 points, placing them 19th in the FBS.
