The Georgia Southern Eagles arrive in Indiana ready to get back in the win column after taking a 31-14 loss to perennial Big Ten power Wisconsin on the road last week. The game was tight at halftime but the Eagles watched as Wisconsin poured on four second-half touchdowns to win going away. The Eagles even briefly led by a touchdown in the game against the Power Five conference foe.
“Anytime you have six turnovers on the day, it doesn’t matter how many yards you have or how you’re moving the ball, that’s going to end up being a loss,” Georgia Southern head coach Clay Helton said. “We’re a little sick in that locker room feeling like we gave away an opportunity to make it a close game going down the stretch.”
Quarterback Brin Davis was 33-of-52 for 383 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Davis threw five interceptions in the game. He was under dures s for much of the game, sacked four times in the loss. Wide receiver Derwin Burgess Jr. led the receivers with eight catches for 124 yards while fellow receiver Jjay McAfee caught the lone touchdown pass of the game. Running back OJ Aarnold rushed 10 times for 61 yards and a score in the game as well. Overall, the Cardinals had 455 yards of total offense in the game, outgaining the Badgers in the process.
On the defensive end, the Eagles allowed 244 yards passing and a whopping 207 yards on the ground to the Badgers. They did allow 22 first downs to Wisconsin but did hold the Badgers to just 3-of-11 on third down conversions. Marquis Watson-Trent led the Eagles with nine tackles in the game. The team registered just one sack and didn't force any turnovers.
Georgia Southern will look to improve to 3-1 this week likely on the strength of its passing attack. The Eagles are ranked 27th in the nation in total offense th rough three games. They are just 102nd on the ground but an impressive fourth in the country in passing. They can ill-afford, however, to throw as many interceptions as they did last week at Wisconsin. On the defensive end, the Eagles have struggled thus far ranking 116th overall in total defense. They are 76th against the run and a dismal 120th against the pass.
Georgia Southern will need to get vastly improve upon their turnover differential as the season progresses. They are currently ranked 131st in the nation in turnover differential. The Eagles have been fairly disciplined in the penalthy department. They check in at 54th in the country in penalties per game.
Injury Report: DB TJ Smith, TE Jjay McAfee, RB Jalen White and WR Sam Kenerson are all questionable.
