A pair of mid-major programs collide on the gridiron in search of a victory in the Yellowhammer State as the MAC collides with a member of Conference USA. The Eastern Michigan Eagles are on the road as they travel to face the Jacksonville State Gamecocks Saturday afternoon. Eastern Michigan comes in off a narrow 19-17 home win over UMass in their previous game last Saturday, failing to cover the line as an eight-point favorite. Jacksonville State had a bye week last week: they fell 30-16 to Coastal Carolina on the road back on September 9, failing to cover the line as a 13.5-point underdog. This marks the first time that the two programs have met on the gridiron as FBS opponents.

Eastern Michigan managed to escape with a win over UMass at home last Saturday though they failed to cover the line in the contest. The Eagles are 2-1 on the season and look to make it 3-1 ahead of the start of MAC play next week. Against UMass, Eastern Michigan led 10-3 at the half and 13-10 in the fourth quarter before giving up the go-ahead score with 2:42 to play. The Eagles rallied, driving 77 yards in five plays, capped by a 50-yard touchdown pass from Austin Smith to Hamze El-Hayat with 1:20 to go. Their defense stopped UMass on the Minutemen’s final drive to earn the win. Eastern Michigan was outgained 464-371 in total offense, lost the first down battle 23-14 and dropped time of possession by a 32:36 to 27:24 margin in the contest. The Eagles prevailed in the turnover battle, forcing four UMass turnovers, which they turned into 10 points, while committing only one giveaway.

For the y ear, the Eagles are 127th in the nation in passing offense as they average 134.3 yards per game through the air and 92nd in rushing offense by picking up 135 yards per contest on the ground. Eastern Michigan is 114th in the FBS in scoring offense as they put up an average of 19.3 points per game while they are 63rd in scoring defense by allowing 21.7 points per contest. Austin Smith has completed 41 of 74 passes for 403 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions on the season. He is third on the team in rushing as he has 15 carries for 60 yards on the year. Samson Evans leads the team on the ground with 35 carries for 214 yards and a score this season. Jaylon Jackson (22 carries, 120 yards, TD) is the second back in the system. Tanner Knue leads the team with 15 receptions for 117 yards and a score this year. Blake Daniels (seven catches, 92 yards) and Hamze El-Hayat (five catches, 81 yards, TD) are the only other players with at leas t 50 receiving yards this season. Jesus Gomez is one of two on extra point attempts and four of four on field goal attempts with a long of 45 this season. Kenyon Bowyer is four of four on extra points and connected on his lone field goal attempt from 25 this year.
