After a tough first season in Norman, Oklahoma second-year head coach Brent Venables seems to have the Sooners playing his brand of football. Last Saturday, the Sooners hit the road for the first time this season and blasted in-state rival Tulsa 66-17. With the win, the Sooners improved to 3-0 on the season and are now ranked 16th in the country as they head to Cincinnati this Saturday.

“Dillon put a lot of really good balls out there today,” Venables said. “The receivers did a great job of attacking leverage and being in a position of dominance and we went up and made some competitive catches, several competitive catches today.”

“I really like this team,” Venables said. “They're hungry and they're driven and their willingness to do the hard things is what I really like. It's on both sides of the ball. It's a good win.”

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel had anothe r big week for the Sooners, throwing for 421 yards on 28-of-31 passing. Gabriel threw five touchdown in the decisive victory. Wide receiver Nic Anderson had three grabs, all for touchdowns, and fellow wideout Jalil Farooq had six catches for 126 yards and a score. In all, three Sooners had over 100 yards receiving in the win. Overall, the Sooners had 521 yards of total offense and 27 first downs in the game.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Sooners held Tulsa to 212 yards of total offense and had five interceptions in the game. Danny Stutsman took one of the interceptions to the house for a 30-yard pick-six in the first quarter. The Sooners had an impressive 15 tackles for loss in the game including four sacks in the one-sided victory.

Oklahoma is anxious to put last season's 6-7 campaign behind them and, thus far, they have done just that. The Sooners currently rank fifth in total offense through three games . They are 37th on the ground and an impressive 7th through the air. QB Gabriel has played himself into Heisman-contention with his early start. On the defensive end, the Sooners are starting to take on the look of a Venable-type defense. They are 20th in total defense thus far. The Sooners are 20th against the rush and 49th against the pass.

Part of Oklahoma's success thus far has been the team's ability to force turnovers. They are currently fifth in the nation in turnover differential. They have struggled, however, with penalties this season. Oklahoma ranks just 99th in the country in penalties per game.
