It’s the opening game of an early week series on the diamond between a pair of NL West foes down in southern California. The Colorado Rockies are on the road as they make the trip to open a three-game series with the San Diego Padres Monday night. Colorado closed a four-game series at home with the Giants Sunday afternoon looking for a sweep. The Rockies swept a doubleheader Saturday, winning the opener 9-5 and the nightcap 5-2. San Diego went into Sunday with a shot at a sweep of the A’s on the road. The Padres earned a 5-2 victory in the middle game of the series Saturday. In the season series, the Padres own a 6-4 advantage, including taking two of three on the road in the most recent series between the teams July 31-August 2.

Colorado went into Sunday having won five straight games after sweeping a doubleheader from the Giants Saturday. The Rockies entered Sunday’s action last in the NL West with a 56-92 record and stood 34.5 games behind the Dodgers for the top spot. They were the lone team in the National League eliminated from playoff contention going into Sunday. On Saturday, Ezequiel Tovar (run, four RBI) had three hits while Brenton Doyle (two runs) added two in the opener. Brent Suter allowed two runs on two hits with two walks and one strikeout in two innings of work, though he didn’t factor in the decision. Karl Kauffmann (2-4) earned the win in relief as he threw four innings, allowing one run (none earned) on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Gavin Hollowell threw 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts, for his first save. In the nightcap, Charlie Blackmon (two runs), Tovar (two runs, RBI ), Kris Bryant (run, two RBI) and Brendan Rodgers each had two hits for the Rockies. Kyle Freeland didn’t factor in the decision as he threw three innings, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Victor Vodnik (1-0) earned the win as he threw two innings, allowing one run on two hits with no walks and one strikeout. Tyler Kinley worked the ninth, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout, to earn his fourth save.

Ty Blach is on the bump for the Rockies as he makes his 18th appearance and 11th start of the season in this contest. He is 3-1 with a 4.64 ERA, a 1.547 WHIP, 17 walks and 38 strikeouts over 64 innings of work this season. Blach earned the win in his last start, which came Wednesday at home against the Cubs. He threw five innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts in a game the Rockies went on to win 7-3. In his last three starts, Blach is 2-0 with a 6.75 ERA, a 1.94 WHIP, five walks and 12 strikeouts over 16 innings of work. Blach makes his 14th career appearance and sixth start against the Padres in this contest. He is 1-3 with a 5.44 ERA, a 1.395 WHIP, 14 walks and 24 strikeouts over 43 innings of work against them. Blach is 0-2 with a 7.54 ERA, a 1.765 WHIP, 10 walks and 11 strikeouts over 22.2 innings in seven career appearances, three starts, at Petco Park.
