The seventh-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions kick off their Big Ten schedule this Saturday as they travel to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini. Penn State is 2-0 after winning two straight lopsided home games to begin the season while the Illini are 1-1 after falling on the road this week to Kansas. The Penn State Nittany Lions hit the road for the first time this year on Saturday coming off yet another one-sided victory this past Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Penn State demolished Delaware 63-7 behind 541 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns on Saturday afternoon to improve t0 2-0 on the season.
” A couple of things I thought offensively, I just thought we were very efficient. We were able to stay on the field, we were able to sustain drives, we were able to convert on third down. We converted a few times on fourth down. The one thing is the penalties; and we've been pretty disciplined with that. I wasn't happy with that (today). But besides that, I thought we played very efficient today on offense.” Penn State head coach James Franklin said after the game.
Sophomore quarterback Drew Allar continued his ascension going 22-of-36 for 204 yards and a touchdown in the win before b eing taken out one possession into the 3rd quarter. Backup Beau Pribula threw and ran for a touchdown in the game as well. The Nittany Lions running back pair of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen combined for 155 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns. Overall, Penn State rushed for 315 yards on the day. Wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith led Penn State with 74 yards receiving.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Nittany Lions held Delaware to just 140 yards of total offense and just five first downs in the game. Linebacker Dominic DeLuca led the way by picking off his first career pass and returning it all the way for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Penn State also recovered a fumble in the game and had 6.5 tackles for loss in the game including four sacks.
In 2022, Penn State ranked 32nd in total offense. They have scored a total of 101 points in their two wins thus far this season. The Nittany Lions were ra nked 40th on the ground last season and 45th through the air. With Allar at the helm this season, the Nittany Lions passing attack looks to be even stronger.
Defensively, Penn State ranked an impressive 14th in total defense last year. They were 16th against the run and 36th against the pass. Penn State has allowed a total of 22 points to two inferior teams thus far as they head to Illinois for their first road test.
