Boston won their second straight and their fifth in the last six games as they took down the Nationals in the opening game of this set Tuesday night. The Red Sox improved to 63-56 on the season and stood fourth in the AL East, 10.5 games behind the Orioles for the top spot. They were three games behind the Blue Jays for the final wild card spot in the American League. On Tuesday, Boston got two hits from Triston Casas (two RBI) and Pablo Reyes (run) while Alex Verdugo led off the game with his ninth homer of the season. Nick Pivetta threw 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts, though he did not factor in the decision. John Schreiber (2-1) earned the win as he threw a scoreless inning, allowing no hits or walks while striking out two. Kenley Jansen worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out one, for his 28th save.

Chris Sale is on the mound for the Red Sox as he makes his 13th start of the season in this contest.
