Los Angeles won their second straight and their sixth in the last seven games as they managed to outlast the Tigers in the opening game of this set Tuesday night. The Angels entered Wednesday 52-49 on the season and stood third in the AL West, 6.5 games behind the Rangers for the top spot. They were 3.5 games behind the Blue Jays for the final wild card spot in the American League playoff picture. On Tuesday night, Los Angeles got three hits from Andrew Velasquez (two runs) while Luis Rengifo (two runs, RBI), Mike Moustakas (run, two RBI), Mickey Moniak (RBI) and Eduardo Escobar (RBI) each added a pair in the game. Griffin Canning didn’t factor in the decision as he threw five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Carlos Estevez (4-1) got the vulture win after blowing the save as he allowed four runs (none earned) on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts in one inning of work. Aaron Loup worked a scoreless 10th inning, allowing no hits or walks while striking out two, for his first save.
Chase Silseth is on the hill as he makes his 11th appearance and third start of the season for the Angels in this contest. He comes in 2-1 with a 4.44 ERA, a 1.479 WHIP, 15 walks and 25 strikeouts over 24.1 innings of work this season. Silseth earned the win in his last outing, which was a start against the Yankees last Wednesday at home. He threw 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts in a game the Angels went on to win 7-2. In his last three outings, one start, Silseth is 1-0 with a 2.79 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP, five walks and 13 strikeouts over 9.2 innings of work. Silseth, in his 18th career major league appearance and his 10th start, pitches against the Tigers for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career outing at Comerica Park.
