It’s the start of an interleague series between a pair of teams with playoff aspirations as they collide on the shores of Lake Erie. The Philadelphia Phillies are on the road as they open up a three-game series with the Cleveland Guardians Friday night. Philadelphia played the rubber game of their three-game home series with the Brewers Thursday afternoon, falling 4-0. Cleveland missed a chance to sweep the Pirates on the road in their three-game series as they were defeated 7-5 in the finale of the set Wednesday afternoon. The teams have split the last 10 meetings with the Guardians taking two of three at home in the most recent series between them September 20-22, 2019.

Philadelphia couldn’t get their bats in gear in the finale of their set with the Brewers, leading to a shutout loss on getaway day. The Phillies dropped to 52-44 on the season and entered Thursday night tied for second in the NL East, 10.5 games behind the Braves for the top spot. They were tied with the Marlins for the final wild card spot in the National League. On Thursday afternoon, Philadelphia had just two hits in the game, singles by Nick Castellanos and Bryson Stott. The Phillies were zero for three with runners in scoring position in the contest. Taijuan Walker (11-4) took the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts over six innings of work.

Ranger Suarez takes the hill and makes his 13th start of the season for the Phillies in this contest. He comes in 2-4 with a 3.84 ERA, a 1.353 WHIP, 25 walks and 62 strikeouts over 68 innings of work on the year. Suarez didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came Saturday at home in the first game of a doubleheader against the Padres. He threw six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in a game the Phillies ended up winning 6-4. In his last three starts, Suarez is 0-2 with a 5.82 ERA, a 1.82 WHIP, 10 walks and 12 strikeouts over 17 innings of work. Suarez didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career appearance against the Guardians, which came in relief on September 20, 2019. He threw a scoreless inning, allowing no hits with one walk and one strikeout in a 5-2 Phillies loss. That outing came at Progressive Field, giving Suarez a passing familiarity with the park.
