Detroit nearly erased a five-run deficit in the ninth inning Tuesday night only to wind up falling a run short in the second game of this series. The Tigers entered Wednesday third in the AL Central with a 42-52 record and stood six games behind the Twins for the top spot in the division. They stood 9.5 games behind the Astros for the final wild card spot in the American League standings. On Tuesday night, Detroit got three hits each from Spencer Torkelson (two runs, five RBI) and Javier Baez (run, RBI) to lead the way only to fall short. Torkelson (his 13th and 14th) homered twice in the loss but the team went just three of 14 with runners in scoring position in the loss. Tarik Skubal (0-1) took the loss as he allowed seven runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts over four innings of work. With the tying run on third, Riley Greene lined out to center to end the game.
