Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Detroit Tigers Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 5-16-2023

It’s the opening game of a short interleague series on the diamond between a pair of teams trying to gain ground in their respective divisions in the Motor City. The Pittsburgh Pirates are on the road as they play the first game of a two-game series with the Detroit Tigers Tuesday night. Pittsburgh avoided a sweep on the road at the hands of the Orioles over the weekend as they earned a 4-0 victory Sunday afternoon. Detroit dodged a three-game sweep at home by Seattle as they earned a 5-3 win in the series finale Sunday afternoon. Last season, the Tigers won three of the four meetings, including a two-game road sweep in the most recent series June 7-8, 2022.

Pittsburgh won for just the second time in their last 13 games as they blanked the Orioles in the finale of their three-game series on the road Sunday afternoon. The Pirates entered Monday 22-19 on the year and stood second in the NL Central, 1.5 games behind the Brewers for the top spot. On Sunday, Pittsburgh had seven hits with no player recording more than one in the victory. Ji Hwan Bae drove in a pair of runs while Carlos Santana and Ke’Bryan Hayes each knocked in one as well. That was more than enough for Mitch Keller (5-1), who tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits with no walks and 13 strikeouts, to earn the win. All told, Pirates’ pitchers fanned 17 Baltimore hitters without walking one in the contest.

The Pirates are expected to send Luis Ortiz to the mound for his second start of the season in this contest. He enters the game 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, on e walk and one strikeout in the majors this season. In his season debut, which came against the Rockies last Tuesday at home, Ortiz took the loss. He allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout in a 10-1 Pirates defeat. In his sixth career major league start, Ortiz pitches against the Tigers for the first time. As a result, this marks his first career start at Comerica Park as well. In the minors this season, he has posted a 2-1 mark with a 2.23 ERA, a 0.959 WHIP, 11 walks and 29 strikeouts over 32.1 innings of work. Ortiz is 14-15 with a 3.79 ERA, a 1.205 WHIP, 101 walks and 317 strikeouts over 294.2 innings of work in 66 career appearances, 62 starts, in the minors.
