San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-25-2023

It’s the opening game of a series between National League teams on the diamond in the Friendly Confines on the north side of the Windy City. The San Diego Padres are on the road as they make the trip to kick off a three-game set with the Chicago Cubs Tuesday night. San Diego won three of four on the road over Arizona in a weekend set, winning the finale 7-5 Sunday afternoon. Chicago dropped three of four at home to the Dodgers as they were beaten 7-3 in the finale of the series Sunday afternoon. Last season, the Padres won the season series 5-2, including a four-game sweep here at Wrigley Field in the most recent series June 13-16, 2022.

San Diego took three of four from Arizona on the road over the weekend as their team is finally getting closer to full strength. The Padres improved to 12-12 on the season entering Monday and stood third in the NL West, half a game behind the Diamondbacks and Dodgers for the top spot. In Sunday’s game, San Diego got three hits from Matt Carpenter (run, five RBI) while Jake Cronenworth (two runs, two RBI) added a pair. Carpenter hit his third homer of the season in the victory to spur the Padres to victory. Yu Darvish (1-2) earned the win on the mound as he threw 5.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Josh Hader worked the ninth, striking out one, for his eighth save of the year.

Blake Snell is on the mound for his fifth start of the season for the Padres hoping to get himself going in a positive direction. He comes in 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA, a 1.889 WHIP, 13 walks and 21 strikeouts over 18 innings of work this season. Snell took the loss in his last start, which came against the Braves at home last Tuesday. He threw five innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts in a game the Padres eventually dropped 8-1. In his last three starts, Snell is 0-2 with a 5.93 ERA, a 1.98 WHIP, 12 walks and 12 strikeouts over 13.2 innings of work this season. Snell makes his third career start against the Cubs in this contest. He comes in 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, a 1.083 WHIP, seven walks and 10 strikeouts over 12 innings of work. Snell didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career start at Wrigley Field, which came with Tampa Bay on July 5, 2017. He threw five scoreless innings, allowing four hits with four walks and five strikeouts in a game the Rays eventually dropped 7-3.
