Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-23-2023

The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates will resume their series on Sunday at PNC Park.

Cincy will start right-hander Hunter Greene in the series finale. The 23-year-old is 0-0 with a 4.24 ERA in his four previous outings. Pitt will counter with fellow righty Vince Velasquez. The 30-year-old is 2-2 with a 5.12 ERA in four appearances this season.

First pitch from Pittsburgh PA, is at 1:35 p.m. ET. The Reds are slight favorites and the total is 8.5.

Cincy hasn't won a series since beating Pittsburgh in the first set of the new season. The Reds are looking to the future, though, signing Greene to an extension worth $53 million of six years, and will now turn their attention to lefty starter Nick Lodolo.

Cincinnati scores 4.35 runs per game (20th) and hit .237 (20th) with a .679 OPS (23rd). The Reds have hit 15 home runs (26th) and stolen 13 bases (18th). 2B Jonathan India paces the club in hits (22) and OBP (.419), while 1B Jason Vosler leads the team in home runs (3) and RBI (10). The pitching staff has posted a 5.27 ERA (26th) and a 1.58 WHIP (28th) with five quality starts.

The Reds will look to Greene to lead them to victory in the series finale. The promising young pitcher exited his last start after three innings after being hit in the shin by a comebacker. He suffered a right tibia contusion and X-rays were negative. In his 2023 debut, which also came against Pittsburgh, he gave up three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings, with three walks and eight Ks.
