New York managed to win the rubber game against the Dodgers on the road Wednesday afternoon to head into this series on a positive note. The Mets entered Thursday 12-7 on the season and stood second in the NL East, two games behind the Braves for the top spot in the division. On Wednesday against the Dodgers, New York got five hits from Brandon Nimmo (two runs, two RBI) while Francisco Alvarez (run) had two hits in the game. Nimmo hit his first homer of the year in the victory. Max Scherzer didn’t factor in the decision as he threw three scoreless innings, allowing one hit with two walks and three strikeouts before getting ejected for an illegal substance on his glove. Jimmy Yacabonis (2-0) earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Adam Ottavino earned his third save despite allowing one run on one hit with no walks and a strikeout in one inning of relief.

With Carlos Carrasco on the IL, the Mets are expected to call up Joey Lucchesi from Triple-A Syracuse to make his first start of the year. He made three starts for Triple-A Syracuse of the International League this season, going 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA, a 1.149 WHIP, seven walks and 16 strikeouts over 15.2 innings of work. Lucchesi hasn’t pitched in the majors since June 18, 2021 as he spent last season rehabbing after Tommy John surgery. This marks Lucchesi’s eighth career start against the Giants. He comes in 2-2 with a 3.52 ERA, a 1.278 WHIP, 12 walks and 45 strikeouts over 38.1 innings of work against them. Lucchesi is 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA, a 1.563 WHIP, five walks and 13 strikeouts over 16 innings in three career starts at Oracle Park.
