The Florida Panthers won the President's Trophy for the most points in the NHL in 2021-22 but this year, the Panthers struggled through the regular season before making a late push to earn the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. The Panthers' reward is a date with this year's President's Trophy winner, the record-setting Boston Bruins. In game one, the Panthers fell behind 2-0 and never could quite get back in the game. Matthew Tkachuk scored for the Panthers in the second period and Alex Lyon made 26 saves but it was a soft goal he gave up in the second period that spelled doom fo the Panthers.

“He was good. He'll want the second one back,” Florida coach Paul Maurice said of Lyon. “I'm not measuring that as the tell of his game, we'll measure it by the saves that he made.”

Despite the loss, the Panthers did several things well against the Bruins on Monday night. Florida outshot the Bruins 32-29 in the game and outhit Boston 44-43. The Panthers did go 0-2 o the power play against the league's best penalty killing unit. The Panthers also lost the face-off battle, winning 48% compared with 52% for Boston. The Panthers did an excellent job of forechecking and keeping play in Boston's end for much of the second period and into the start of the third period. And, despite the soft goal allowed, Lyon made some spectacular saves in his first-ever NHL playoff start.
