The Arizona Diamondbacks are on the road as they play the first game of a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals Monday night. Arizona played the final game of a three-game set with the Marlins Sunday afternoon on the road looking to avoid being swept: they fell 3-2 in the middle game of the series Saturday. St. Louis closed out a four-game series at home with the Pirates Sunday hoping for a split. The Cardinals fell 6-3 in 10 innings Saturday afternoon in the third game of the set. Arizona went into Sunday with three losses in their last four games as they were beaten by Miami for the second straight game. The Diamondbacks entered Sunday 8-7 on the season and they were tied for first with the Dodgers in the NL West race. On Saturday, Arizona finished with six hits in the game with no player having more than one in the loss. Christian Walker and Gabriel Moreno each drove in a run in the loss. Ryne Nelson turned in a no-decision despite a solid start as he threw six innings, allowing one run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Scott McGough (0-1) took the loss as he allowed two runs on three hits with no walks or strikeouts in one-third of an inning of relief.

Merrill Kelly is on the bump as he logs his fourth start of the season for the Diamondbacks in this contest. He comes in 0-2 with a 2.93 ERA, a 1.435 WHIP, 12 walks and 15 strikeouts over 15.1 innings of work o n the year. Kelly took the loss in his last start, which came Tuesday at home against the Brewers. He threw six innings, allowing three runs on one hit with four walks and seven strikeouts in a game the Diamondbacks dropped by a 7-1 score. Kelly makes his fifth career start against the Cardinals in this contest. He comes in 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, eight walks and 22 strikeouts over 24 innings of work against them.
