Chicago was at home Thursday as they played the rubber game of a three-game series with the Giants. The White Sox earned a 7-3 win in the middle game of the set Wednesday afternoon. Pittsburgh swept a three-game road set in Beantown as they downed the Red Sox 4-1 in the series finale Wednesday afternoon. The White Sox took three of four meetings in 2021, the last year the teams met. That included a two-game sweep at home in the most recent series August 31-September 1, 2021.

Chicago was in action Thursday afternoon as they hosted the Giants in the rubber game of a three-game set ahead of flying to the Steel City for this series. The White Sox entered Thursday 3-3 and stood third in the AL Central, 1.5 games behind Cleveland for the top spot. On Wednesday, Chicago got three hits from Luis Robert (two runs, RBI) while Andrew Benintendi (two runs), Yoan Moncada (RBI) and Gavin Sheets (three RBI) each added a pair in the victory. Dylan Cease (1-0) earned the win as he allowed one run on one hit with five walks and eight strikeouts, throwing 99 pitches, before departing. Five relievers covered the rest of the game to secure the win.

Lucas Giolito takes the ball for the White Sox here as he makes his second start of the season. He has no record with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, one walk and six strikeouts on the year. Giolito didn’t factor in the decision in his season deb ut, which came Saturday on the road against the Astros. He threw five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts in a game the White Sox eventually dropped 6-4. Giolito makes his fifth career start against the Pirates in this contest. He is 1-0 with a 3.09 ERA, a 0.986 WHIP, nine walks and 28 strikeouts over 23.1 innings of work. Giolito didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career start at PNC Park, which came on June 22, 2021. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in a game the White Sox eventually dropped 6-3.
