Boston dropped their second straight game to the Pirates in interleague action as they were unable to get any offense going at Fenway Park Tuesday night. The Red Sox entered Wednesday 2-3 on the season and were tied for fourth in the AL East standings, three games behind the Rays for the division lead. On Tuesday night, Boston finished with just four hits with Reese McGuire picking up two of them, both doubles. Alex Verdugo (run) and Justin Turner had the other hits while Masataka Yoshida drove in the lone run for the Red Sox. Nick Pivetta (0-1) took the loss on the mound as he threw five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Chris Sale makes his second start of the season for the Red Sox looking to get back on track after a rough debut. He comes in with no record, a 21.00 ERA, a 3.00 WHIP, two walks and six strikeouts on the season. Sale didn&# x2019;t factor in the decision in his first start of the season, which came Saturday at home against the Orioles. He threw three innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in a game the Red Sox rallied to win 9-8. Sale makes his 34th career appearance and 24th start against the Tigers in this contest. He is 10-8 with a 2.96 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, 44 walks and 194 strikeouts over 173.1 innings of work against them. Sale is 4-5 with a 2.90 ERA, 1.128 WHIP, 23 walks and 88 strikeouts over 80.2 innings in 14 career appearances, 11 starts, at Comerica Park.
