Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-4-2023

Two of baseball's more storied franchises do battle this week as the Philadelphia Phillies visit the Bronx to take on the New York Yankees. This 2009 World Series rematch continues on Tuesday when the Phillies' Matt Strahm (4-4, 3.83 in 2023) serves as an opener taking on the Yankees' Domingo German (2-5, 3.61 in 2022). The first pitch is slated for 7:05 PM EST.

The Phillies' season looked to be off and running in the opener after building a 5-0 lead over new Texas Rangers' ace Jacob deGrom. However, things didn't hold up, and the Phillies ended up on the wrong end of an 11-7 score. Things didn't get much better the rest of the weekend as the Phillies were swept by the Rangers. Fresh off of a World Series appearance in 2022, the Phillies added All-Star shortstop Trea Turner to an already potent lineup and expectations are sky-high in Philadelphia, despite the slow start. On Monday night, the Phillies pitching was pounded again in an 8-1 loss to the Yankees. Turner had two of the Phillies ten hits but they would leave eight runners on base and collect just two extra-base hits in the loss. Starter Taijuan Walker lasted 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on four hits while walking three to pick up the loss.

The Phillies will send out left-hander Matt Strahm as an opener on Tuesday night. The Phillies starting staff is without Ranger Suarez to start the season so the team's depth will be tested. Last season, pitching in Boston, Strahm pitched 50 games out of the bullpen without making a start. Strahm went 4-4 with an ERA of 3.83 and a WHIP of 1.23. He threw 44.2 innings while allowing 38 hits and striking out 52. Strahm will not likely give the team more than two innings in this spot before turning it over to the bullpen.

Key Injuries: OF/DH B.Harper is out. N. Pitchers N. Nelson, C. Sanchez, R. Suarez and N. Song are all out.
