These teams met in Pittsburgh three times last season, with Boston winning two of those games. The teams meet on Monday, but the preview was written prior to the conclusion of this contest. Entering Friday, Boston had beaten the Pirates in five of the last six games.
The Pittsburgh Pirates scored just three total runs in the final two contests of their three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds, dropping both of those contests. That included a 3-1 loss on Sunday. The team scored five runs in the opener, but now has just eight runs scored through the first three games of the year.
The Pirates bullpen has been solid early, allowing three runs in 10.2 innings. This is a very young starting staff that is going to go through some growing pains, so the team needs this bullpen to be a strength. Rob Zastryzny has appeared twice already, tossing 1.2 scoreless frames. Roansy Contreras gets the start for Tuesday. He pitched very well last season, going 5-5 with a 3.79 ERA working primarily in the rotation. Contreras has made one appearance aga inst Boston, giving up four runs in six innings on August 17, 2022.

The Pirates are hitting just .196 through the first three games and have two homers. Bryan Reynolds hit his first homer of the season on Sunday and Oneil Cruz leads the team with three RBI. He hit the other homer for the team.
