Toronto won their opener but dropped their two games over the weekend by multiple runs as they were outscored by a combined 13-5 by St. Louis. The Blue Jays entered Monday 1-2 on the season and looked to get back on track. Against the Cardinals Sunday, Toronto got three hits from Matt Chapman (two runs, RBI) while Daulton Varsho (run) added two in the contest. The Blue Jays were down 4-0 after the opening inning and never got back to even in the contest. Chris Bassitt (0-1) took the loss in his Toronto debut, giving up nine runs on 10 hits with no walks or strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work. He surrendered four homers in his outing.

Yusei Kikuchi takes the hill for the Blue Jays for the first time this season hoping to build on a strong spring. He made 32 appearances, 20 starts, for Toronto last season, posting a 6-7 record with one save, a 5.19 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, 58 walks and 124 strikeouts over 10 0.2 innings of work. He was 2-1 with a 0.87 ERA, a 0.919 WHIP, 10 walks and 31 strikeouts over 20.2 innings in seven appearances, six starts, during spring training. Kikuchi makes his sixth career start against the Royals hoping to get his first win against them. He is 0-2 with an 8.69 ERA, a 1.831 WHIP, eight walks and 16 strikeouts over 19.2 innings of work. Kikuchi is 0-1 with an 8.38 ERA, a 2.069 WHIP, five walks and eight strikeouts over 9.2 innings in three career starts at Kauffman Stadium.
