A pair of teams from the American League open up the first full week of the MLB season on the diamond in the Show Me State. The Toronto Blue Jays continue their tour of the state of Missouri as they kick off a four-game set with the Kansas City Royals Monday night. Toronto played the rubber game of a three-game series against the Cardinals in the St. Louis Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays were beaten 4-1 in the middle game of the set Saturday. Kansas City went into Sunday hoping to avoid a home sweep at the hands of the Twins. The Royals were blanked 2-0 Saturday afternoon in their most recent game. In the season series last year, the Blue Jays owned a 5-2 advantage, including taking three of four at home in the most recent series July 14-17, 2022.

Toronto couldn’t get their bats going in Saturday’s middle game of the set against the Cardinals. After scoring 10 runs in the opener Thursday, it seemed like the off day Friday stunted their momentum as they dropped to 1-1 on the year. In Saturday’s game, Toronto finished with just three hits as Kevin Kiermaier had two while Bo Bichette had the other. The Blue Jays had opportunities, as they drew 10 free passes, but left 12 runners on base as they went zero for 11 with runners in scoring position. Kevin Gausman (0-1) was a tough luck loser in the game as he threw six innings, allowing three runs (none earned) on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. A Matt Chapman error in the third inning extended the inning and led to three unearned runs.

The Blue Jays hand the ball to Jose Berrios as he makes his first start of the 2023 campaign here. He made 32 starts last season a nd went 12-7 despite posting a 5.23 ERA, a 1.419 WHIP, 45 walks and 149 strikeouts over 172 innings of work. Berrios led the AL in hits allowed (199) and earned runs (100) while giving up 29 long balls. Berrios made four starts in spring training, posting a 2-0 mark with a 4.30 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, six walks and 13 strikeouts over 14.2 innings of work. This marks Berrios’ 20th career start against the Royals. He is 6-4 with a 4.45 ERA, a 1.374 WHIP, 36 walks and 101 strikeouts over 111.1 innings of work on the year. Berrios is 2-1 with a 4.81 ERA, a 1.466 WHIP, 22 walks and 41 strikeouts over 58 innings over 10 career starts at Kauffman Stadium.
