San Francisco Giants vs. Chicago White Sox Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-3-2023

It’s the start of the first full week of the MLB season and it brings us an interleague series on the south side of the Windy City. The San Francisco Giants are on the road as they play the opening game of a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox Monday afternoon. San Francisco played the rubber game of their three-game set on the road in the Bronx against the Yankees Sunday afternoon. The Giants evened the series as they downed the Bronx Bombers 7-5 Saturday in their previous game. Chicago closed a four-game road set against the Astros Sunday afternoon looking for a split: they were beaten 6-4 Saturday in the third game of the set. In the most recent series between the teams, the White Sox swept a three-game road set July 1-3, 2022.

San Francisco opens the season with nine straight interleague games, the first six on the road, so they open the back half of that road swing here. The Giants earned the win Saturday over the Yankees to even their record at 1-1 on the season. In that game, Brandon Crawford (two runs, three RBI) had three hits while Joc Pederson (two runs, RBI), Mike Yastrzemski (two runs, RBI) and David Villar (run) each added a pair. Crawford (his first) and Pederson (his first) each went deep in the victory. Alex Cobb didn’t factor in the decision as he threw 3.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Jakob Junis (1-0) earned the win in relief as he allowed one run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts over 2.1 innings. Camilo Doval managed to earn his first save despite allowing one run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout in one inning of work. He got Giancarlo Stanton to bounce int o a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Anthony DeSclafani is slated to make his season debut for the Giants in this contest. He made five starts last season for San Francisco, going 0-2 with a 6.63 ERA, a 2.00 WHIP, four walks and 17 strikeouts over 19 innings of work. DeSclafani made three starts in spring training, going 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA, a 0.931 WHIP, one walk and 12 strikeouts over 9.2 innings of work. This marks DeSclafani’s second career start against the White Sox: he didn’t factor in the decision in his previous outing. In that game, which came with the Reds at home on July 3, 2018, he threw 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in a game that Cincinnati eventually dropped 12-8 in 12 innings. DeSclafani, in his 162nd career appearance and 152nd major league start, pitches at Guaranteed Rate Field for the first time here.
