San Francisco Giants (0-1) vs. New York Yankees (1-0)

The 2023 Major League Baseball Season is underway as the San Francisco Giants take on the New York Yankees in the second game of the season. This interleague battle will be at Yankee Stadium in New York, New York. The Yankees enter as the favorite at -135 with a run total set at 8.5.

The Yankees opened the season with a 5-0 victory over San Francisco on Thursday. That was the fifth straight victory for the Yankees over the Giants, however, these clubs had not played each other since 2019.

The San Francisco Giants started the season on the wrong foot, dropping a 5-0 decision to the New York Yankees on Thursday. This is a tough stretch to begin the year, as the team plays six straight road games against American League teams, including three against the New York Yankees and three against the Chicago White Sox. San Francisco has lost their last five interleague games, so beginning the season on the road against American League opponents is not the best way for this club to start their season.

The Giants produced just four hits in the loss. Two of those came off the bat of Thairo Estrada, who started his career with the New York Yankees but joined the Giants in 2021. Estrada hit .260 last season as the Giants were led by a power-laden lineup that began the season in the top five in home runs, but tailed off to 12th overall (183). The ability to get on base was a problem for this club in 2022, as they finished 15th in on-base percentage (.315) and 23rd in batting average (.234). The shutout to start the season does not bode well for a team looking to improve offensively.

San Francisco will start right-hander Alex Cobb who went 7-8 with a 3.73 ERA in 28 starts last season. The right-hander got off to a tough start in 2022, posting a 5.73 ERA coming out of May, but posted ERAs under three in each of the next two months. The San Francisco bullpen allowed one run in two innings pitched in the opener. Last year, the Giants bullpen finished 20th with a 4.08 ERA and were 23rd with a 1.38 WHIP.
