New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 3-31-2023

New York will try to build on its season-opening win over Miami when the teams meet again on Friday evening. The Mets scored a pair of late runs in a 5-3 win on Thursday, with Max Scherzer picking up the win as the starting pitcher. Miami took the loss in front of more than 31,000 fans during the first game of a seven-game homestand.

New York never trailed on Thursday, but it was certainly not a dominant win for the Mets. They scored their first two runs on sacrifice flies in the third and sixth innings before second baseman Jeff McNeil drove in a run on a single later in the sixth. Miami wound up tying the game with three runs in the bottom of the frame, but New York scored the game-winning runs on a Brandon Nimmo double in the seventh inning. Right fielder Starling Marte and McNeil each finished with two hits for the Mets, who ranked second in the MLB in team batting average last year (.259).

Left-handed pitcher David Peterson is going to start for New York on Friday night. He secured the final spot in the rotation over Tylor Megill after they entered a competition when Jose Quintana suffered a rib cage stress fracture. Peterson had some issues with control in spring training, walking eight batters across 12 innings, but he did not allow a run in Grapefruit League play and held opposing hitters to a miniscule .028 while striking out 13. He bounced between the starting rotation and the bullpen in 2022, posting a 3.83 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 105.2 innings.
