Pittsburgh ended up falling 4-3 in overtime to the New York Islanders at home Thursday night in their last game. Philadelphia dropped their second straight and their sixth in the last seven games as they were blanked on the road by Carolina Thursday night. The Flyers entered Friday night seventh in the Metropolitan Division with a 24-30-11 record, leaving them 35 points behind the Hurricanes for the division lead. They were 22 points back of the Rangers for the final guaranteed playoff spot and 15 points back of Pittsburgh for the second wild-card spot. Philadelphia comes into this game 29th in the league in scoring offense as they put up 2.57 goals per game. The Flyers are tied for 19th in the league in goals against as they give up 3.25 goals per contest. Philadelphia is 32nd in power play success as they successfully convert on 15.3% of their opportunities with the man advantage. The Flyers are 27th in penalty killing as they have managed to navigate through 75% of their shorthanded situations on the year . On Friday morning, the franchise fired general manager Chuck Fletcher after the team did next to nothing at the trade deadline.

Against Carolina Thursday, Philadelphia gave up an early goal and were unable to dent the twine, sending them to defeat despite a relatively well-played defensive game. The Flyers saw the shots even at six in the opening period but they gave up the lone goal of the stanza, at 2:09 of the first period, on the power play, to trail 1-0 after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Philadelphia was outshot by a 15-7 margin with neither side lighting the lamp, keeping it a 1-0 game at the second intermission. Despite trailing after two periods, the Flyers didn’t generate much in the way of scoring chances in the third period as they were outshot 8-6 in a scoreless frame, leaving them on the wrong end of a 1-0 score. Felix Sandstrom made 28 saves for the Flyers, who were outshot 29-19, in the loss. Carter Hart is expected to get the call in goal for this contest.
