Minnesota was able to upset Nebraska in the opening round, but was outmatched from the beginning against the much stronger Maryland. The Gophers turned the ball over 15 times, with several early unforced turnovers that set the tone for the game. Maryland was led by forward Donta Scott with 20 points in the win.

Jahmir Young had 15 points and went 9-11 from the free throw line against Minnesota. The 6'1 senior transferred in this season from Charlotte and led the Terrapins in scoring with 16.2 PPG and adding 4.8 RPG, and 3.2 APG. Young attacks the basket, as he leads the team in free throw attempts. He shoots from the perimeter, but it is not the strongest part of his game as he only converts 31.7% from deep. Donta Scott is coming off a big game, the 6'8 senior has an inside-out game and averages 11.6 PPG and 6.0 RPG.
