San Jose was walloped 8-3 at home by Washington Saturday afternoon in their previous contest. They were in action on the road at Winnipeg Monday night. Colorado was beaten 3-2 in overtime at home by Seattle Sunday night in their previous game. San Jose was in action against Winnipeg Monday night in the front half of a back-to-back set that ends here. The Sharks entered Monday 18-33-12 and last in the Pacific Division standings, 34 points behind Vegas for the top spot and 30 behind the Kraken for the final guaranteed playoff spot. They were 26 points behind the Jets for the final wild-card spot. San Jose is 23rd in the league in goals for as they average 2.94 goals per contest. The Sharks are 30th in goals against as they allow an average of 3.71 goals per contest. San Jose stands tied for 25th in the league in success with the man advantage as they have cashed in on 18.5% of their power play chances this season. The Sharks are 5th in penalty killing as they have successfully navigated 82.8% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

In the game against Washington Saturday afternoon, the Sharks were lit up in their own end and that proved to be their undoing. The Sharks owned a 20-5 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period and took a 2-0 lead to the dressing room at the first intermission. Tomas Hertl opened the scoring with his 16th goal of the season, on the power play, at 12:03 with Erik Karlsson and William Eklund drawing the assists. Alexander Barabanov made it 2-0 in favor of the hosts with his 13th goal of the year at 15:30 with Logan Couture and Andreas Johnsson drawing the helpers. The second period saw the Sharks outshot 15-9 and outscored 4-0 to trail 4-2 at the second intermission. In the third period, San Jose held a 12-10 edge in shots on goal but was outscored 4-1 to end up with the loss. After giving up a goal to trail 5-2, Nico Sturm tallied his 13th of the year at 9:02 off assists from Noah Gregor and Karlsson to make it a 5-3 game. The good feeling lasted nine seconds before Washington tallied to extend to a thre e-goal margin and then poured it on for the win. Kaapo Kahkonen made 22 saves for the Sharks, who owned a 41-30 edge in shots, in the loss. He is slated to be between the pipes again here.
